How to Keep Your Own AI Server Up to Date?

Short answer

With a fixed rhythm for three things: system security updates, updating the software in use, and – less frequently – a model change. The model change is the most labor-intensive part because it cannot be evaluated without a collection of test cases.

Three Levels

Operating System and Drivers. As with any server. Graphics drivers are additionally relevant and occasionally tricky – a driver change can affect the model software.

Model Server Software. Develops quickly, new versions regularly bring performance gains. Not every version is stable.

The Model Itself. New versions are released several times a year.

Why Model Changes Are Labor-Intensive

A new model behaves differently: instructions have different effects, output formats vary, and the tendency for fabricated information changes.

Without a collection of test cases with known correct answers, it is impossible to determine whether the new model is better or worse. You only notice it during operation.

A Practical Rhythm

What How Often
Security Updates As available, promptly
Model Server Software Check quarterly
Model Check biannually, change only if there is a clear advantage

Never Without a Fallback

Before any change: The previous version must remain recoverable. For models, this means not deleting the old version immediately – it takes up storage, but storage is cheaper than downtime.

The Honest Effort

An own AI server is not a one-time investment, but a system that requires maintenance. Those who do not plan this time will operate an outdated and potentially insecure installation after a year.
