Question Clearly sourced

Expert knowledge for digital decisions

Are there funding options for digitalization projects?

Short answer

Yes, at the federal, state, and partially EU level – however, the programs change frequently, expire, and are reintroduced. The most important rule: The application must be submitted before the commissioning. Those who commission first and then apply usually lose their entitlement completely.

The one rule that always applies

Apply first, then commission. Almost all programs require that the project has not yet started at the time of application. A signed contract is considered the start.

This is the most common and costly mistake.

  • Federal Funding Database – central search for federal, state, and EU programs
  • State Funding Banks – each federal state has its own programs
  • Chamber of Industry and Commerce – free initial consultation
  • In Switzerland: cantonal economic promotion, Innosuisse for innovation projects

What is typically funded

Digitalization of processes, introduction of new systems, IT security, qualification of employees. Pure replacement of existing technology is usually not funded.

What you should plan for

  • Time. It often takes weeks to months between application and approval.
  • Effort. An application needs to be written, and a usage report must be maintained.
  • Commitment. Funding is often associated with conditions, such as minimum usage duration.

An honest assessment

Funding is a grant, not a business model. A project that only makes sense with funding should not be pursued – programs can be cut or canceled, and the project will still continue.
