Expert knowledge for digital decisions
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Short answer
Static
The target is embedded in the pattern itself. Advantages: no dependency on a service, works permanently, no ongoing costs. Disadvantages: not changeable, not analyzable, and the longer the stored address, the finer and less scannable the pattern becomes.
Useful for: Wi-Fi access data, business card information, payment data – anything that does not change anyway.
Dynamic
The code only contains a short redirect address. Scanning leads to a server that redirects to the current target.
Advantages: target can be changed at any time, scans can be analyzed, the pattern remains coarse and thus easily readable. Disadvantages: you are dependent on the operation of this redirect. If the service fails or is discontinued, all printed codes become useless.
The crucial question before printing
Who operates the redirect, and what will happen to it in five years? With a print run of 50,000 stickers, this is not a trivial matter. Having your own domain for the redirect is a safer choice than a short URL from a third-party provider.
Changing later
A printed static code cannot be transformed into a dynamic one. Anyone who wants to keep the option for changes open must decide before printing.
Key facts
- Static
- Target in the pattern, not changeable, not analyzable
- Dynamic
- Redirect via server, changeable at any time, analyzable
- Main risk
- If the redirect is discontinued, printed codes become worthless
