How big should a QR code be printed?
Short answer
As a rule of thumb: the width of the code should be about one-tenth of the reading distance. At a distance of 30 centimeters, this means about 3 centimeters; at 3 meters, about 30 centimeters. Additionally, there should be a light margin of four module widths – without it, many readers will not recognize the code.

The Margin is Most Often Forgotten
Around the code, there should be a light area of at least four module widths (one module is one of the small squares). Without this space, a reader cannot recognize the edge of the code. In practice, more codes fail due to the lack of a margin than due to size.
Other Pitfalls
- Insufficient contrast. Dark on light, not the other way around. Many readers cannot handle inverted codes.
- Color gradients in the code. They look good but significantly reduce the readability rate.
- Glossy material. Reflection makes the code unusable under artificial light – use a matte finish.
- Too long address. The more characters, the finer the pattern. A dynamic code circumvents the problem.
Before Printing
Always test a sample print in original size and material with at least three different devices. A code that works on screen may fail on matte recycled paper.
